A Direct Answer
What Is FMCG Sales Recruitment?
It requires an understanding of customer channels, categories, retailer relationships, P&L ownership, forecasting, negotiation, distribution and the commercial realities behind growing accounts profitably.
A CV can tell you that somebody has managed Tesco, Amazon, Foodservice or Convenience. It cannot tell you how much they genuinely owned, what decisions they made, whether they understand the numbers behind an account or how they respond when a customer plan stops working.
That is why specialist FMCG Sales recruitment is about more than matching a job title. It is about understanding the problem the business needs the hire to solve, then assessing the evidence that somebody can actually solve it.

Sales Roles We Recruit
FMCG Sales Talent Across Customers, Channels and Leadership
Different Sales roles require different combinations of customer knowledge, commercial ownership, negotiation skill, pace and leadership. We recruit across the breadth of FMCG Sales rather than treating every account role as interchangeable.
National Account Managers
NAM and Senior NAM roles across Grocery, Discounters, High Street, Convenience, Wholesale, Foodservice, Amazon and other strategic customers.
Key Account Managers
Customer ownership roles where relationship management needs to translate into profitable growth, distribution, listings and stronger commercial plans.
Business Development
New channel, new customer and new business roles for brands that need somebody comfortable creating opportunities rather than only managing established accounts.
Head of Sales
Sales leaders who can set direction, coach teams, improve commercial discipline and translate business strategy into customer execution.
Sales Directors
Senior Sales leadership with responsibility for people, channels, customers, growth plans, forecasting and the wider commercial agenda.
Commercial Directors
Broader commercial leadership roles spanning Sales strategy, revenue, margin, route-to-market, customer relationships and cross-functional decision-making.
National Account Management
What Makes a Strong FMCG National Account Manager?
Relationship building matters, but strong National Account Management is ultimately about growing an account profitably. The best candidates can explain the commercial mechanics behind performance rather than relying on the prestige of the customer name on their CV.
When assessing a NAM, we want to understand what they personally owned: the strategy, negotiation, forecasting, P&L, promotional plan, joint business planning, internal influence and the decisions that changed the result.
Two candidates can both write “Tesco” or “Sainsbury's” on a CV and have had completely different levels of responsibility. Equally, somebody working with a smaller customer may have had far more end-to-end commercial ownership than somebody operating inside a large account team.
Customer & Channel Experience
How Important Is Exact Customer Experience?
Customer and channel experience can matter enormously, but it should not automatically become a tick-box exercise. The real question is what that experience is evidence of.
| Requirement | When It May Be Essential | When We Would Challenge It |
|---|---|---|
| Specific Grocery Customer | Immediate ownership of a complex live negotiation, customer-specific process or relationship where ramp-up time is genuinely limited. | When the underlying need is broader account ownership, negotiation, P&L understanding and relationship building that may transfer from another major customer. |
| Grocery Experience | Roles heavily dependent on Grocery trading rhythms, retailer structure, promotional mechanics and established customer knowledge. | When somebody from Amazon, Convenience, OOH, Wholesale or another channel has already demonstrated equivalent commercial complexity. |
| Exact Category | Where category regulation, route-to-market, shelf life, technical complexity or customer buying structure creates a genuinely specialist requirement. | When commercial capability, pace, leadership and customer ownership matter more than having sold the same product before. |
| Blue-Chip Background | Where the role genuinely requires experience of scale, complexity, matrix working and formal commercial processes. | When the new hire needs autonomy, ambiguity tolerance, hands-on execution and the ability to operate without large support functions. |
“Customer experience is evidence that somebody might be able to do the job. It isn't proof that they're the best person for it.”
Business Environment
Blue-Chip, SME or Challenger Brand?
Great FMCG Salespeople do not automatically perform equally well in every environment. The support structures, decision-making, resources, pace and degree of ownership can be completely different.
In a large organisation, a Salesperson may be surrounded by Category, Revenue Growth Management, Demand Planning, Marketing, Finance and Customer Marketing specialists. In a smaller business, the same person may need to build the customer plan, manage the forecast, resolve an availability issue and influence Marketing themselves.
Neither environment is inherently better. The recruitment challenge is understanding what the candidate has genuinely done themselves and whether the environment they are moving into will bring out their best.
What We Assess
What a CV Doesn't Tell You About an FMCG Salesperson
A CV gives us context. The conversation tells us whether the person understands the commercial decisions behind their results.
Why Did It Work?
Can they explain the commercial logic behind growth, distribution, pricing, negotiation or a customer plan rather than simply quoting the outcome?
What Did They Personally Do?
We separate genuine ownership from achievements delivered by a wider team, inherited customer momentum or a powerful brand.
Who Did They Need to Bring With Them?
Strong FMCG Salespeople influence buyers and also work effectively across Supply Chain, Category, Marketing, Finance and internal leadership.
What Happened When It Went Wrong?
Forecast misses, lost listings, customer resistance and supply challenges reveal more about somebody's commercial maturity than a perfect success story.
Where Do They Perform Best?
We look at pace, structure, autonomy, support functions and culture to assess whether the environment matches the person.
Why Move?
Understanding what somebody actually wants next helps avoid attractive-looking moves that are wrong for the candidate or the employer.
How We Recruit
A Better Recruitment Process Starts With Better Questions
Successful FMCG Sales recruitment starts with understanding what the business actually needs from the hire, not simply matching a job description to a CV.
Our wider approach is relationship-led and consultative: understand the business, challenge the brief where it helps, engage the right market and create a process in which both client and candidate can make a properly informed decision.
Common Hiring Mistakes
Why FMCG Businesses Miss Strong Sales Candidates
Trying to Hire the Person Who Left
Rebuilding the exact profile of the previous incumbent can mean recruiting for yesterday's business instead of the team you are trying to build next.
Too Many Filters
Customer, category, company size, exact title and years of experience can individually make sense. Combined, they can unnecessarily eliminate excellent people.
Overvaluing the CV Logo
Working for a famous brand is not the same as owning the commercial decisions the new role requires.
Moving Too Slowly
Strong Sales candidates are often considering several options. Slow feedback and unclear interview stages can lose momentum quickly.
Benchmarking the Role Poorly
Salary, bonus, flexibility, car allowance and progression all influence the available talent pool. Market advice should come before the search, not after a failed process.
Underselling the Opportunity
Passive candidates need a reason to move. The growth challenge, leadership, autonomy and commercial opportunity need to be communicated properly.

Market & Salary Advice
Not Ready to Recruit Yet?
Use the market before you finalise the job description. We can discuss likely candidate availability, salary expectations, channel experience and whether your must-haves are likely to narrow the pool too far.
That can be particularly useful when creating a new role, replacing a long-standing team member, moving into a new channel or deciding whether specific customer experience is genuinely essential.
Our Approach
How We Run an FMCG Sales Search
Understand the Outcome
What does this person need to achieve? We start with the commercial problem, not a shopping list of CV requirements.
Challenge the Brief
We separate genuine essentials from assumptions around customers, categories, business type and background.
Search the Market
We engage relevant active and passive Sales Talent across FMCG and Consumer Goods networks.
Assess Substance
We explore ownership, numbers, decisions, influence, motivation and environment rather than relying on the CV headline.
Manage the Process
We keep feedback moving, manage expectations and make sure both sides understand the opportunity properly.
Support the Decision
We help the employer and candidate evaluate fit, package, motivation and the practical realities behind the move.
Offer & Close
We support communication through offer, resignation and notice period to reduce avoidable drop-out.
Stay Connected
Good recruitment does not end on day one. Long-term relationships create better market understanding for the next hire too.
Frequently Asked Questions
FMCG Sales Recruitment FAQs
What is FMCG Sales recruitment?
FMCG Sales recruitment is the specialist recruitment of Sales professionals for fast-moving consumer goods and Consumer Goods businesses. Roles can include National Account Manager, Key Account Manager, Business Development Manager, Head of Sales, Sales Director and Commercial Director positions across Grocery, Convenience, Wholesale, Foodservice, On-Trade, eCommerce and other channels.
What makes FMCG Sales recruitment different from general Sales recruitment?
FMCG Sales roles often combine customer relationships with category understanding, forecasting, pricing, promotions, margin, P&L ownership and cross-functional influence. The right candidate therefore needs more than general selling ability; the recruiter needs to understand the commercial environment around the role.
Do FMCG Sales candidates need experience with the exact same customer?
Sometimes specific customer experience is genuinely important, particularly where the hire needs to step straight into a complex live relationship. In other cases, equivalent experience managing another major customer or channel may demonstrate the same underlying commercial skills. Signature challenges the brief where a rigid customer requirement would unnecessarily restrict the talent pool.
Do you recruit National Account Managers?
Yes. Signature recruits National Account Managers and Senior National Account Managers across FMCG and Consumer Goods, including Grocery, Convenience, Wholesale, Foodservice, Amazon, On-Trade and other customer channels.

Do you recruit Sales Directors and Commercial Directors?
Yes. Signature supports senior Sales and Commercial appointments alongside National Account, Key Account and Business Development roles. Senior searches can also connect into Signature's broader Executive Search capability.
