A Direct Answer
The role goes beyond matching CVs to job descriptions. A specialist recruiter understands the functions, channels, categories, retailers, salary expectations and candidate behaviours that influence whether somebody will succeed in a particular FMCG business.
For employers, that can mean identifying relevant passive candidates, challenging the brief where necessary, advising on salary and market conditions, managing interviews and offers, and helping both sides assess long-term fit.
At Signature, Commercial FMCG Recruitment spans FMCG Sales Recruitment , Marketing , eCommerce , Revenue Growth Management plus NPD, Supply Chain and Senior Appointments through Autograph Executive Search .
The key advantage of specialism is context. Selling short shelf-life products is not the same as selling ambient goods. Building a challenger brand requires different characteristics from operating behind a globally recognised brand. An Amazon role, a grocery NAM role and a Revenue Growth Management role may all sit within commercial FMCG, but they require very different networks and assessment criteria.
FMCG Recruitment Insight
Our approach to FMCG recruitment has always gone beyond matching a job description to a CV. Market knowledge, candidate expectations and understanding what makes people move all influence whether a business secures the right hire.
This video from the Signature archive looks at FMCG recruitment trends and the changing recruitment market. Although originally published in 2022, it also shows the specialist FMCG focus that continues to underpin how we advise Consumer Goods businesses today.

View Current JobsWhy Specialism Matters
FMCG recruitment is full of superficially similar job titles that can hide very different commercial realities. A candidate may have the correct level, salary and title but lack the retailer relationships, pace, category experience, entrepreneurial behaviour or cross-functional credibility required by the business.
That becomes particularly important when comparing established manufacturers with challenger brands. A candidate who has succeeded with significant infrastructure and brand awareness may not automatically thrive in a smaller business where they need to create the opportunity, influence with fewer resources and switch rapidly between strategic and hands-on work.
The reverse is also true. Businesses should not demand identical category or brand experience when the strongest candidate has highly transferable characteristics. A specialist recruiter should know when experience is genuinely essential and when an overly narrow brief risks excluding high-potential talent.
Role-relevant behaviours, pace, resilience, commercial judgement, stakeholder influence, adaptability, team fit and the candidate's motivation for making the move should be assessed alongside technical experience.
How We Work
The objective is not to send the greatest number of CVs. It is to create a well-defined search, engage the right people and help the client make a confident decision.
Clarify the commercial objective, role scope, team, culture, leadership style, remuneration and what success should look like.
Use specialist FMCG networks and market mapping to identify both active and passive candidates rather than relying only on applicants.
Evaluate relevant experience alongside behaviours, motivations, cultural fit and the ability to perform in the specific environment.
Manage feedback, interviews, expectations, offer negotiation and communication so strong candidates remain engaged through to joining.

Evidence, Not Generic Claims
Signature's existing case studies show repeated commercial hiring relationships rather than one-off placements.
Signature's published case study describes how it supported Fulfil Nutrition with eight key commercial hires in 2021-22 before continuing the relationship when former Fulfil Sales Director Rob Lockley moved to Perfetti Van Melle.
The subsequent work included nine key personnel appointments across 2024 and the start of 2025. Signature's wider case-study library also covers commercial team building for Cawston Press, Faith in Nature, MPM Products and Speedibake.

You do not need to have a finished job description before speaking to a specialist recruiter. Early market input can help determine whether the brief, salary, location, seniority and desired experience are realistic before a search begins.
For published commercial terms, Signature currently states a 20% recruitment fee , 14-day payment terms and an 8-week free replacement guarantee . See the full fee schedule for the current terms and conditions.
The Employer Experience
The best candidates are rarely considering only one opportunity. Slow decision-making, unclear interview stages, inconsistent feedback, a weak explanation of the role or an offer that does not reflect the market can all cause strong people to disengage.
A specialist recruiter should therefore manage more than sourcing. Candidate expectations need to be understood early, interview feedback needs to move quickly and both sides need an accurate picture of what matters before an offer is made.
Signature's employer resources and published insights repeatedly focus on hiring quality, cultural fit and the cost of treating recruitment as a purely transactional process. For more detail, see support for hiring managers and the FMCG insights hub .
